LeeAnn 1: Hi Terri
TerriNack: Hi all. I just happened to sign on and remembered tonights chat.
Can't stay long...
TerriNack: what's the topic?
Linda8894: Yes. I am logging in Chat log.
LeeAnn 1: Future of Figure skating. Linda is hosting.
Linda8894: The topic is the future of figure skating.
TerriNack: That's a pretty deep topic!
Linda8894: Could be!!!
TerriNack: Do you think there will be more emphasis on athleticism? or
artistry in the future
Linda8894: I think that is up to the skaters and where they would like to see
it go.
LeeAnn 1: Terri, Morry was saying last week that he thinks the sport will
actually branch off into those two
LeeAnn 1: separate divisions.
TerriNack: Seperate competitions?
LeeAnn 1: Don't know.
LeeAnn 1: If he comes, we can ask him.
Linda8894: He said he would try.
LeeAnn 1: Most people show up late.
TerriNack: Maybe separating the two would make the sport less subjective
Linda8894: I would like to see the same music performed by every skater in
the technical program .
Linda8894: That would seem to make it much more fair in the judging
department.
TerriNack: that would make it more fair...
Linda8894: Since they all have to perform the same moves, it would make the
playing field more equal.
TerriNack: someone shouldn't be judged because they picked more interesting
music
SBrackin: More fair in judging maybe, but boring to watch
Linda8894: That is the point.
LeeAnn 1: You're right about it making it more fair, but it would not be as
interesting for the occassional
LeeAnn 1: skating fans out there.
Sita895661: Hi all, whats the topic?
LeeAnn 1: The ones who aren't as involved in the sport.
TerriNack: true...
Linda8894: Not boring, as you would be able to compare each skater's
elements.
LeeAnn 1: Hi Sita and Faxe.
Faxel 1: Hi. What's up today?
LeeAnn 1: Actually, taht's why they don't show gymnastics compulsories
anymore.
Linda8894: Welcome Sita and Faxel. We are discussing the possibility of
usisng the same
TerriNack: There are gymnastics compulsories??
Linda8894: music for each skater in the technical program.
Faxel 1: Interesting concept. . . where did that come from?
LeeAnn 1: Yes, Terri. Actaully, at US nationals they count for more than half
of the score, but they are all the
Linda8894: Just an idea I had given the judging complaints.
LeeAnn 1: same and don't hold the attention of the TV audience so they're
never shown on TV.
Faxel 1: They would never go for it, since audiences would hate it. Besides,
I'm not sure it would improve
LeeAnn 1: You're right, though, Linda. It would make judging more objective
in the short program.
Faxel 1: the judging much. The judges don't really judge what's in front of
them anyway.
LeeAnn 1: But given seeing how skating is being given more and more air time,
I don't think we'll see it. There
Linda8894: But this is a sport which also involves the participants and I
think it would be more fair t
LeeAnn 1: is already so much repetition of the same programs that the TV
producers would balk at it.
Linda8894: to them and the public might learn something from seeing the same
moves
Linda8894: over and over.
TerriNack: I learn from watching dance compulsories
Linda8894: The public would then understand Dick's fawning over a spread
eagle for example.
LeeAnn 1: The already do in the long programs. They're just arranged
differently in the choreography.
TerriNack: and it's the same over and over
Linda8894: Right, Terri, thae dance compulsories work well and this is the
same.
Faxel 1: I think it was a big mistake to change from short program to
technical. The former short programs
Faxel 1: were a lot more comparable.
SBrackin: You would also have trouble with the lower end skaters who can't do
the hardest combo jumps.
LeeAnn 1: But how often do you see dance compulsories on TV?
Linda8894: Agreed, and this is a step in that direction.
Faxel 1: Now they're comparing apples and oranges.
Linda8894: That is the point.
SBrackin: it wouldn't be fair to them. Would you tell them they couldn't be
in the competition?
LeeAnn 1: What exactly is the difference between the short and technical
programs?
Linda8894: The rules are already set for what a skater must do in the
technical program so that would
Linda8894: not be a problem.
Faxel 1: You have a lot more choice with the technical. Before everyone was
doing pretty much the same jumps.
LeeAnn 1: Got it. Thanks, Faxel.
Faxel 1: Now you have to compare different single triples, very different
combinations, etc.
Linda8894: The jumps were designated when it was the short program, i.e. not
just a triple, but a tripl
Linda8894: loop or salchow, etc.
LeeAnn 1: Are they going back to the old way? I think that would be a good
idea.
Faxel 1: For example, what would you rate higher? A triple axel-double toe
combo or a triple lutz/TRIPLE toe?
TerriNack: Why shouldn't the most difficult jumps be rewarded more? (playing
devils advocate)
Linda8894: No they are not, but that is what I am proposing and to further
ensure equal judging, the sa
Linda8894: same music would be an asset to the sakters in the long run.
TerriNack: Should they even use the same choreography??
Faxel 1: I agree with Linda, but the skating establishment would never go for
it. Besides, it wouldn't
Linda8894: Not the point, Terri, they are not given weight now.
LeeAnn 1: The TV people will never go for the same music idea. It's a good
idea for the sport, but not for those
LeeAnn 1: televising it.
Faxel 1: be fair for the skaters. Some skaters are better with certain types
of music than others.
TerriNack: True, but the way moves are presented makes a difference
Linda8894: The choreography could be totally different and thus affect the
artistic mark.
LeeAnn 1: Hi Kate!
STERLINGK8: Hi there, sorry I'm late
Linda8894: Hi Kate, glad you are here.
TerriNack: So there should still be an artistic mark for the technical
program?
TerriNack: (I think there should be, just wondered what you thought)
Linda8894: Pop in your two cents on the proposition that all skaters use the
same music with free
STERLINGK8: Goodness, what did I miss?
Linda8894: choreographical license for the technical program.
Faxel 1: Absolutely. The sport is losing a lot of artistry anyway. Remove the
artistic mark and nothing's left.
Linda8894: Yes, the artistic mark should defintely remain. Otherwise we have
nothing but a jumping
Linda8894: contest.
STERLINGK8: That sounds absolutely dull to me--it'll be like gymnastics where
they play the same music for every
STERLINGK8: body. You can only watch the first few then you start to nod
off.
Faxel 1: But from a judging standpoint, it allows the judges to do anything
they want.
TerriNack: I agree. Better artistry is can bemore athletically difficult in
many instances anyway
LeeAnn 1: And actually, gymnastics is going to drop compulsories -- becuase
they're not adding anything
Faxel 1: For example, at the Goodwill Games, Tautarov had a perfect technical
and Candelloro missed the combo,
Faxel 1: but guess who came out ahead?
LeeAnn 1: commerically to the sport. Personally, though, i think it's a bad
idea. Those little girls need them.
TerriNack: It's really the total package...but how can judging be made less
subjective?
STERLINGK8: Train the judges better at identifying mistakes and what not
Linda8894: I am just thinking of the skaters and the unfairness of judging
completely different program
Linda8894: especially in light of the dropping of figures. It is no longer a
technical sport.
Faxel 1: It's not just a matter of training. The judges KNOW what they're
doing and why they favor certain
Faxel 1: skaters over others.
LeeAnn 1: Some would disagree, Linda, and say it's too technical and not
artistic enough.
Linda8894: Judges are human and will always miss something and make mistalkes
and also
Linda8894: be taken with a piece of music or showmanship. Fine for the long,
but that has no place in
Linda8894: the technicalal program since it was supposed to replace thke
short and figures.
Faxel 1: How come they always make "mistakes" in favor of certain people?
Faxel 1: Of the SAME people, I mean.
Linda8894: By technical, I do not mean jumps, I mean edges, control and
difficult moves.
Linda8894: This would also remove politics as the comparisons would be so
much easier.
Faxel 1: I doubt anything could ever remove politics.
Sita895661: Well, not really, what about ice dancing?
LeeAnn 1: I'd like to see them go back to saying exactly what moves/jumps are
required, though. That would make
LeeAnn 1: it easier for comparisons.
SBrackin: You're dreaming if you think you can totally eliminate politics.
They'll still "err" in
SBrackin: favor of their favorites.
Sita895661: I'm with LeeAnn..
Sita895661: on required moves, that is..
LeeAnn 1: Thanks. :)
LeeAnn 1: Hi Melissa
Linda8894: Hi Melissa
Faxel 1: THe required moves are required of some people and not others, in
the real world.
MelissaIS1: Hello everyone! Loooong time no see, eh?
Linda8894: Yes, that is the way it is now, but if all was spelled out and all
used the same music, the
LeeAnn 1: Faxel, that is true in trying to make the judges act more fairly,
but it is possible to make the
LeeAnn 1: competition theoretically more fair.
Linda8894: playing field would be more level. They could still use the
freeskate for showmanship.
Faxel 1: You're right LeeAnn. Sorry if I sound too cynical.
Linda8894: I agree that TV may not like it, but what is good for the sport
and it's participants?
Linda8894: And furthermore, what is fair?
SBrackin: I think they need to do something to encourage, not discourage
artistry. There's too much
Faxel 1: For the sport it would be best. Unfortunately, it would deny us some
great numbers.
Sita895661: Linda, would the short would still be worth 1/3?
Linda8894: Yes, it should be.
SBrackin: emphasis on jumps and quads. And when someone like Surya can be a
champion
SBrackin: somethings not right somewhere.
TerriNack: I don't think there is too much emphasis on jumps--it's a SPORT,
ballet is not
Faxel 1: But she's a champion not because of her jumps, but only because of
the judges.
Linda8894: No one is suggesting that artistry not be encouraged. This way it
would be interesting to s
TerriNack: Although I agree they should have to be well done
Linda8894: how each skater interpreted the music.
TerriNack: Jumps shouldn't be given equal weight if they are cheated
TerriNack: Or done poorly.
Faxel 1: I would remove the artistic mark if they introduced an interpretive
event.
TerriNack: Just because someone can land it doesn't mean the jump is done
correctly
Sita895661: hi Laura..
Faxel 1: It could count for 10 or 20 percent.
Linda8894: No, then the artistic mark would be even more important.
SBrackin: Amen, Terri
Linda8894: Hi laaura, good to hear from you.
Sita895661: Terri, I've been talking with a judge and she explained a lot
about the quality of jumps..
LauraP1808: I agree with that Terri, but lately I think many times the cheats
and faulty technique is
Faxel 1: I mean remove the artistic mark from the TECHNICAL program.
LauraP1808: being ignored
TerriNack: It shouldn't be ignored. Jumps should be done right. No half
rotation on the ground
Linda8894: Laura, I suggested thkat all skaters skate to the same music in
the technical program with t
Linda8894: the same required elements for more fair comparison.
TerriNack: or taking off from the wrong edge.
Sita895661: re hi LeeAnn
LeeAnn 1: Sorry about that - I was booted off by AOL.
Linda8894: I agree, Terri and this way the judges would have a more fair
comparison.
TerriNack: I realize no ones is perfect, but the jumps should be judged by
how they are done
LauraP1808: Sort of like cumpunsary dance, Linda?
STERLINGK8: I was worried about you, Lee
Linda8894: Yes, exactly, but only for the technical program.
LauraP1808: Terri, did you watch the Olympic Festival?
TerriNack: Part of it.
LeeAnn 1: No, I'm fine -- and finally got back online.
LauraP1808: Not all of Tara Lipinski's jumps were technically correct
Faxel 1: If they ever marked the quality of jumps, Surya could never make the
top 20 at Worlds.
LauraP1808: True
Linda8894: Agreed, Faxel
TerriNack: Amen, Faxel!
HARDbodz: need help?
Linda8894: That is the point. If everyone had to execute the same moves to
the same music, the judges
Linda8894: the public both would have a fair comparison to make.
LeeAnn 1: I agree about the same moves part.
Faxel 1: The technical program is so hard to mark, that there are bigger
differences between judges than in
Faxel 1: the free program.
Linda8894: Lee, the music too can mesmirize the public or a judge.
LauraP1808: Don't be surprised if in the not too distant futures that there
will be a separation in the
LauraP1808: programs. One technical, one artistic. It's already being
discussed
LeeAnn 1: But the same music time and time again will drive away the general
public and bore the judges by the
LeeAnn 1: time teh final skaters are up.
Faxel 1: We were just talking about that, Laura. Hope it happens.
LauraP1808: Morry seems to think it will
Linda8894: Yes, Laura, that is what prompted me to discuss this.
STERLINGK8: Hi Janet
Faxel 1: Hi Janet.
JL Pooley: Hi folks. Sorry to be so late; had to work work work, ick ick ick
LeeAnn 1: Hi Janet
Sita895661: Hi Janet..
LauraP1808: Perhaps the technical program will be more like a compulsary
moves program with no music
Faxel 1: It would be a lot fairer . . . but ... YAWN!
Linda8894: Hi Janet, jop in here.
TerriNack: That would be interesting.
Linda8894: We are all too worried about TV and not enough about the skaters.
STERLINGK8: Why don't they just bring the compulsories back?
Faxel 1: Ugh!
LauraP1808: Many skaters would like them to be.
Sita895661: But looking at ice dancing, even with compulsory dances the final
results are always..well,
SBrackin: Not enough dollars to be made with compulories
Sita895661: questionable
Linda8894: Because figures were a part of that and the older skaters did too
well there.
STERLINGK8: I for one would like to see a bit more maturity (probably the
wrong word) in skaters.
STERLINGK8: I want to see EDGES!
Faxel 1: The figures left even more room for subjectivity.
LauraP1808: Elvis said she wished they were back
LeeAnn 1: That is true Linda, but you can't realistically ignore the TV
revenue.
TerriNack: Yes EDGES!!
Sita895661: Agree, Kate
JL Pooley: Auggghhh!! Not MATURITY!! :) :)
LeeAnn 1: The sport won't progress further into the public image without it.
Linda8894: I agree about edges and I think TV is hooked already.
STERLINGK8: I told you it was probably the wrong word, but I can't think of
anything better
LauraP1808: I find a big difference already in the way some of these up and
comers skate who haven't
TerriNack: I would like to see more footwork too.
LauraP1808: done figures. They have zilch for footwork, seldom skate
backwards etc
Faxel 1: Judges could hold anyone down when they had figures. Nothing anyone
could do about it.
JL Pooley: Actually, it's not the wrong word Kate; it's just been overused by
Dick Button. :)
STERLINGK8: You know, I turn down the sound when I know he's talking
STERLINGK8: Or drooling
Sita895661: play the drinking game Kate..
LeeAnn 1: You can't do that, Kate. He's too funny to miss.
Linda8894: Agreed, Janet. But maturity is what the sport needs. We
concentrate so much on the new kid
Faxel 1: Dick really outdid himself this time, didn't he?
Linda8894: and force the verterans out of the sport for big bucks that our
international prowess has su
Linda8894: suffered.
SBrackin: Gee, can I join the I hate Dick club, too!
LeeAnn 1: It's nice to see a real adult skating out there.
LauraP1808: I don't see the women's field gaining maturity any time fast.
They are getting younger and
LauraP1808: younger
Linda8894: I think we should cultivate longevity as experience is so
important in this sport.
Faxel 1: It's not just maturity they're lacking. It's personality.
STERLINGK8: Absolutely, and I'm getting older and older!
LeeAnn 1: And it's pathetic when the 14 year old is one of the most mature in
the US field.
SBrackin: I really think you won't see too many as young as Michelle Kwan. I
think she's something
SBrackin: that's going to prove to be very special in the next four years.
Linda8894: Agreed, LeeAnn and isn't Dick aptly named?
STERLINGK8: Kwan is special though--there aren't too many like her
LeeAnn 1: Hahaha, Linda. That's certainly true.
JL Pooley: There have been National Champions Kwan's age before, or only a
little bit older.
Linda8894: Tiffany Chin was nearly as young and look what happened to her.
JL Pooley: Not that she's champion yet, but it's likely.
Faxel 1: ANd Elaine Zayak!
TerriNack: Well, I'm calling it quits, It's late here in Ohio. Wish I could
stay and chat.
LeeAnn 1: Night Terri.
Sita895661: night Terri..
JL Pooley: ACtually I was thinking of Janet Lynn
TerriNack: This has been an interesting conversation!!
STERLINGK8: Me too-- I'm going to get dinner
JL Pooley: Goodnight Terri
Linda8894: We are encouraging youngsters too fast and too soon.
STERLINGK8: Ciao evryone.
JL Pooley: Goodnight Kate
LeeAnn 1: Night Kate.
Sita895661: bye Kate
LauraP1808: Night
Linda8894: Goodnight Kate, I will be heding for dinner soon myself.
SBrackin: I'm signing off, too, thanks for letting me join in.
JL Pooley: And wasn't Peggy Fleming about 15 when she won her first National
title?
LeeAnn 1: How old was Hammil?
LauraP1808: It's a lot easier to haul yourself off the ice when you are a
flat chested 12 year old
LauraP1808: and do triples
LeeAnn 1: Night SBrackin. Good to see you here.
Faxel 1: Probably, but Peggy had no competition because of the plane crash
business.
JL Pooley: Hamill was around 17, I think; I'd have to check.
Linda8894: Right, Janet, but the girsl were not expected to do triples back
then.
Faxel 1: I think Dorothy was 16, but I"m not sure.
Linda8894: Another good point, Faxel
JL Pooley: So it's the triples that cause the burnout?
Sita895661: I think so Janet..
LeeAnn 1: I think Kwan is extraordinary as well, but I don't think she'd be
considered the premiere US women
LeeAnn 1: if we had a stronger field.
LauraP1808: Triples[or lack thereof] has caused many cases of burnout
Linda8894: No not burnout but injuries for sure and ungroomed competiveness.
Faxel 1: By the time girls gain any maturity, they lose the triples.
LauraP1808: Physics
LeeAnn 1: Think that's what happend to Ervin?
LeeAnn 1: Hi Julie!
JulieD3964: hi everyone
JL Pooley: Hi Julie
Sita895661: I hope Ervin is coming back strong..
Linda8894: Hi Julie, welcome and good to hear from you.
Faxel 1: I don't think Ervin really had the triples. Too bad.
JulieD3964: janet the tassel woman
Sita895661: don't know about Nicole Bobek though..
Linda8894: Tassel?
JL Pooley: julie the costume designer extraordinaire
Sita895661: no Julie, Janet the pearl lady..
LauraP1808: It's a lot harder for a full grown woman to do triples than a
little sprite. More impressive
JL Pooley: Julie and I have been joking about costumes, Linda.
Linda8894: No sequins?
LauraP1808: when they do them, but definitely harder
Faxel 1: er... are we supposed to be in on all this?
Linda8894: No, they are inside joking now.
JL Pooley: It's tassels made of pearls now, Sita.
JulieD3964: in the armpits
JL Pooley: Just a little evening silliness, that's all.
Linda8894: Julie, what do you think about having the skaters using the same
music and the same required
Faxel 1: No problem :) That's what we're here for.
Linda8894: moves for the technical program?
JL Pooley: Hey, maybe they should take age and build into consideration when
they judge... :) :)
JulieD3964: I like the technical program the way it is
JL Pooley: Only now it's the Short Program again.
Faxel 1: THey should start by taking into consideration what happens on the
ice for a change!
JL Pooley: Hi Marge!
LeeAnn 1: Hi Marge!
Linda8894: Would quad size be an asset in the mens division then Janet?
Sita895661: hi Marge!
MargeR1: Hi all!
Linda8894: Hi marge!
JulieD3964: marge.......:)
JL Pooley: Well, that's just it, Linda. If a big guy like Prince B does a
quad, maybe it would count more
JL Pooley: than if a little guy like Aren does one. :) :)
Linda8894: No I meant the size of thighs.
JulieD3964: This ain't no beauty contest - it's SKATING
JL Pooley: Oh, I see, duhhhh, LOL Linda!!
Linda8894: Aagreed, Julie and that's why I though a more fair playing field
migh be needed
Faxel 1: Wanna bet the likes of Urmanov and Katarina get 3 tenths more for
looks?
Linda8894: Urmanov for looks??????
JL Pooley: I was joking around, Julie, by saying that since it's harder for a
full grown woman to do triples
LeeAnn 1: I think Debbi Thomas would have agreed with you on that one, Faxe.
JL Pooley: as opposed to a little sprite, they ought to take age and build
into consideration when they judge.
JL Pooley: *sigh* I adore Urmanov's looks....
JulieD3964: So steroid man should get an extra .1 for having a big butt? no
way
Linda8894: His costuming and his funky chicken move has to go though, Janet
JL Pooley: No, but his big-butt triple would count more than a little-butt
triple. :) :)
Faxel 1: IF Urmanov could only skate like he LOOKS . . .
JulieD3964: I like the chicken move - he's sooooo coooool
Linda8894: Who is steroid man, Julie?
LeeAnn 1: As well as the answering-the-telephone move.
JL Pooley: Nope, love the costumes! Pink! Pearl!
Sita895661: I noticed another weird move..kinda like he was cranking
something..
JulieD3964: don't forget the tassels
Linda8894: And the elizabethan collar
JulieD3964: so I should get a LOT of extra points for having a big butt and
legs and stomach and front size & head
JulieD3964: skating must be my sports afterall......
JL Pooley: But only if you land the jump, Julie... :)
Linda8894: I like his skating, but he needs costuming and choreography
JL Pooley: If only all men knew how enchanting they look in elizabethan
styles....
JulieD3964: But do I have to stay up on the nonessential stuff?
Sita895661: Actually, I thin k his skating technique iis improving..
JL Pooley: You mean the "foo-foo"?
Sita895661: don't those collars itch?
Linda8894: No, Julie, you can falal on footwork and three turns
JulieD3964: Alexei DOES have costuming & choreography - you just don't LIKE
it
JulieD3964: Ouch - I fell on footwork & three turns tonight
Faxel 1: Actually I DO like him. Better than Elvis and Candelloro, anyway. He
could use a choreographer,
Faxel 1: that's all.
Linda8894: I guess that is it Julie, but I think he has a better program in
him
Linda8894: Julie how are your Harlicks?
JulieD3964: have to go back again I think - not sure
Linda8894: My Brian one is a bit too big yet, but my Scott one is perfect.
JulieD3964: want to hear the scoop from the rink?
JL Pooley: That's so cute, Linda; it sounds like you NAMED the boots!! :) :)
Linda8894: I am going to continue breakin for a couple more weeks before I do
anything.
JL Pooley: We ALWAYS wanna hear the scoop from the rink.
Linda8894: I can still pick my heel up in the Brian boot though and I don't
think that is good.
Sita895661: Spill Julie..
JulieD3964: Well, this guy Milo was talking to this gal Denise and Milo told
Denise that he
JulieD3964: knew what Scott Davis's long program was gonna be this year
Linda8894: Yes, janet, muy boots are names as Brian signed the right one and
Scott signed the left one.
JL Pooley: And.... [she said breathlessly]
JulieD3964: Denise asked what it was gonna be and Milo said "West Side Story"
LeeAnn 1: Linda, if they fix the boots, won't that ruin the signature?
Faxel 1: I was about to ask if it's West Side Story III....
JulieD3964: So Denise said NOT AGAIN and Milo said it's a new cut and
different songs
JL Pooley: Oh, I knew about the signatures, I just liked they way you
described the boots.
Linda8894: No not at all, they would just expand the heel hugger pads.
JulieD3964: And DEnise asked which one and Milo said it was just variations
on ONE song
Linda8894: Scott's program will definitely not be West Side Story this year
and I have this from Scott
Sita895661: another West Side Story?
LeeAnn 1: Good, I thought they'd have to cut the leather and pull it in more.
JulieD3964: Denise asked What song? So milo answered........
MargeR1: Do you know what Scott's music will be?
JulieD3964: I FEEL PRETTY
Faxel 1: Ah... the suspense!
JL Pooley: LOL
MargeR1: you are naughty! <G>
LeeAnn 1: Julie, where the devil do you come up with this stuff? :D LOL
JulieD3964: A friend told me that :)
JL Pooley: My gosh you dragged that one out a long time! I almost believed
you!
JL Pooley: Re-hi, Laura
Linda8894: Kind of like when they arrested John Ellway in the OJ Simpson
case, huh?
LeeAnn 1: I know I've been asking around, but is anyone going to Pro-Am?
JulieD3964: laura
JL Pooley: *sigh* Want to, can't really afford to.
